We wait all week for Urbana’s Market At The Square, and once a month the market is even more fun than usual thanks to Sprouts At The Market.
Not familiar with Sprouts At The Market? Let us fill you in. During market season (May through November), the city of Urbana offers this nutrition, farm-linkage and mealtime program for kids ages 3-8.
Sprouts gives kids the chance to try new fruits and veggies that are being sold at the market that week, and there’s always a fun theme. It also doubles as a self-guided tour of the market and the nutrition programming has been developed by a dietetics grad student, Jennifer Hewitt.
Every kid that visits all the stations for each Sprouts event will get a certificate of participation, a 25 percent discount at Art Mart Toys good all day, and sometimes even a special prize!
And you’re in luck! This weekend, on Saturday, June 16, Sprouts presents “It’s Summer, Sprouts!”
This event will have special emphasis on farms and farmers, along with in-season produce sampling, and nutrition/mealtime information. No pre-registration is required – caregivers and kids can check in at Sprouts HQ (NW entrance to the Market) or at any one of the three Sprouts tables in the Market.
Additional Sprouts At The Market dates are:
7/21: What’s On My Plate? This event will have special emphasis on nutrition, plus in-season produce sampling, and farmer/mealtime information.
8/18: Some Say Tomato! This event will be all about tomatoes – how and when they grow, their many varieties, who grows them for our market, why they’re good for you, and things you can make from tomatoes. Several different kinds (and colors) of tomatoes will be available for kids to sample.
9/15: Let’s Eat Our Colors! This event will have a special emphasis on mealtime, with produce of all colors featured for kids to sample. Information about our farmers and their farms will also be available.
10/6: Pumped For Pumpkins! This event will feature guest educators from The Great Pumpkin Patch in Arthur – they’ll come to Sprouts ready to teach kids about curcurbits: squashes, pumpkins, and gourds. We’ll post more information as it becomes available.
You can also find us at the Market whenever Sprouts is happening. Stop by our booth, just across from the Sprouts HQ, and say hey!
So stop by the Market At The Square this weekend and sign up for Sprouts At The Market. And don’t forget to stop by and see us, too. We’ll be there and we can’t wait to see all of our Chambana friends.
Hope we see you there!
