‘Supporting Positive Change’ Program Helps Kids Who Struggle

If your child exhibits social, emotional and/or behavior problems that negatively affect his or her school performance, the Supporting Positive Change program can help.

Kids are under a lot of pressure these days, especially at school. New experiences, new friends, new feelings and new ideas can sometimes overwhelm even the most stable youth. Some kids appear to breeze through it all while others seem to struggle. These children may start “acting out” in school or home; they may cut classes or even skip school entirely. They may get caught up in fights with peers and/or adults in school. As a result, these kids are often in danger of being suspended or expelled from school; this at a time when they are supposed to be learning and growing.

Supporting Positive Change is a program offered through Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. They will work with you to help your child change his or her negative behavior, reduce the chances of being suspended and increase the chance of success in school.

One group will be offered in one location of Champaign County during each quarter of the year. Location of the groups will depend upon need and where the referrals to the program are coming from.

Students can be referred to the program by parents, schools, social service agencies and the Department of Children and Family Services. Supporting Positive Change is open to all residents of the communities in Champaign County.

If the groups are currently filled or have already begun for the quarter, the child will be put on a waiting list for the next quarter. A new group will begin July 10, 2012; please call (217)398-3011 ext. 837 and ask for Beth Loisel for more information.
