The Urbana High School Wind Symphony has been accepted to play at the 2012 University of Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival on Saturday, May 5, 2012 on the Great Hall Stage at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.  This is one of the highest honors a concert band can receive in the state of Illinois; it is the equivalent of an athletic team playing for the state championship.

Every year hundreds of bands from across the state submit tapes of their performances to the University of Illinois Band Department.  These tapes are then sent to three college band directors around the country who then anonymously rank each performance tape.  These rankings are then sent back to the U of I, and the SuperState performers are announced.  It is a great honor, and the band members are thrilled to be participating this year.

On the performance day, each band performs in its class for three judges.  Urbana is participating in Class AA.  At the conclusion of all Class AA band performances, the judges will select the 2012 Class AA Honor Band.  Whichever band receives this honor is automatically invited back next year to perform as the Class AA Honor Band (this band does not have to go through the selection process). Other than the selection of an honor band, no other rankings are given by the judges.  However, each performing group will receive written and taped comments on their performance as well as a high quality CD recording of the performance.
