Weekend Planner: O-verwhelmed Edition

This is a great chance to build up your child’s spring/summer wardrobe, get some toys or books, or pick up some baby gear. New this year – a free petting zoo on Sunday from 1-4! The sale is at the former Hobby Lobby building, 2002 Glenn Park Drive (off of Mattis Ave.)

This weekend there are so many amazingly wonderful things to do for families in Champaign-Urbana, we are simply overwhelmed! Boneyard Arts Festival, Earth Day events, and so much more. Without further ado:

What: Boneyard Arts Festival
When: Thursday April 19- Sunday April 22
Where: Downtown Champaign, U of I campus, downtown Urbana, all over Champaign County
How Much: mostly free; some events have fees
Good For: All ages

What: Earth Day celebrations
When: Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22
Where: Champaign and Urbana
How Much: Free
Good For: All ages
Why You Should Go: This weekend’s events include a free tree tour in West Side Park, an Electronics Recycling event at Research Park, get a free reusable tote at Target, and much more. Check out our guide. 

What: Football Family Fun Fest
Where: Memorial Stadium Zuppke Field, Champaign (in case of weather, will be moved to Indoor Practice facility)
When: April 21, 10 to 11:30 a.m.
How much: Free – park for free in Northwest and Northeast Assembly Hall lots
Appropriate for: all ages
Why You Should Go: Fans will be able to meet the new coaching staff and collect autographs, take photos and participate in a variety of fun activities with Illinois players. Football drills and competitions will be available for youngsters age 13 and under in addition to inflatable games like the bounce house, bungee run, and giant slide. On-site registration is required for all children that wish to participate in the on-field activities. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be held just inside Gate 24 on the west side of Memorial Stadium, which will be the only entrance used for stadium entry.

What:  University of Illinois Wildlife Medical Clinic’s Wildlife Baby Shower
Where: Prairieland Feeds, 303 South Dunlap Street, Savoy
When: April 21, 1- 4 p.m.
How much: Free – donations will be accepted
Appropriate for: all ages
Why You Should Go: Guests are invited to stop to meet the Clinic’s resident birds of prey, see wildlife orphans, and play baby shower games. At 1:30 and 2:30 there will be presentations on what to do when you find a baby wild animal. Donations from the Clinic’s Baby Wildlife Shower Wish List are welcome.

What:  Aquafina® Major League Baseball® Pitch, Hit & Run™ Local Competition
Where: McFarland Field, just north of BT Washington School and the Douglas Center, 606 E. Grove St., Champaign.
When: SundayApril 22, 1 p.m.
How much: Free
Appropriate for: 7-14
Why You Should Go: Pitch, Hit & Run™ is the Official Skills Competition of Major League Baseball®. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills. Competitors are divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2012 MLB™ All-Star Game®. All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of the competition.
