Weekend Planner: Fall is Here Edition

This is a great chance to build up your child’s fall wardrobe, get some toys or books, or pick up some baby gear. The sale is at a new location — the former Hobby Lobby building, 2002 Glenn Park Drive (off of Mattis Ave.)

What: Savoy Orchard Days 
When: Friday, Sept. 16., 5 to midnight; Saturday, Sept. 17, 8 a.m. to midnight
Where: Dana Colbert Park, Savoy
How much: Free; food available for sale; carnival rides, other items may be ticketed
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Plenty to do for the kids at this festival – balloon twisters, arts and crafts, face painting, carnival rides, bingo, tractor pull, and more. Of course, lots of food, free music and more!

What: Prairie Breezes Mini Concerts for Kids Presents the Arcadia Chamber Players
When: Friday, Sept. 16., 4:15 to 5 p.m.
Where: Urbana Free Library 
How much: Free
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Kick off the weekend with the magical music of the Arcadia Chamber Players as they share a narrated arrangement of Little Red Riding Hood, children’s songs from other movies and fairy tales, and dance pieces.

What: Urbana Park District Jazz Walk
When: Friday, Sept. 16., 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
WhereMeadowbrook Park, Urbana
How much: Free
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Walk the hard paths through Meadowbrook Park’s Wandell Sculpture Garden and hear local jazz soloists, duets, combos and more. Lighted luminaries add to the ambiance.

What: Monticello Celebration
When: Friday, Sept. 16 – Saturday, Sept. 17
Where: Downtown Monticello
How much: Free admission (food for sale, some events may be ticketed)
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Great festival featuring music and local food vendors. The very popular Pet Parade and Contest starts at 10 a.m. Saturday; this year’s Kid’s Activities will include a Bounce House, Petting Zoo, and Kiddie Tractor Pull. There will also be lots of other games and make-it take-it activities. Also this weekend: Railroad Days at theMonticello Railroad Museum. 

What: Sprouts at the Market
When: Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.
Where: Market at the Square, Lincoln Square, Urbana
How much: Free
Appropriate for: Kids 3-8
Why you should go: This month, kids will take a nutrition and mealtime-oriented Market tour augmented by produce samples and other treats. Participants will learn about the new My Plate nutrition guidelines, the importance of family mealtimes, and will get a chance to sample in-season produce and other foods supplied by local vendors. All kids get a prize! Co-sponsored by the University of Illinois’ Family Resiliency Center. Come see us – we’ll be there!

What: NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick Competition
When: Saturday, Sept. 17, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Dodds Soccer Complex, Bradley Avenue and Parkland College Drive, Champaign
How much: Free
Appropriate for: Kids 6-15
Why you should go: Boys and girls ages 6-15 can show off their football skills at Dodds Soccer Complex as they compete for distance and accuracy in each of the three categories. Overall top scorers in each division advance to the Sectional Championship. The event is FREE, but you’ll need a copy of your child’s birth certificate as well as a signed waiver that must be turned in at registration. Sponsored by the Champaign Park District.
