Focusing On The Mother — And The Woman

Mothers spend so much of their time focused on their children that they often forget about themselves. Moms need to be sharing, learning, growing, and having fun in order to keep a healthy balance in their lives.

mothers&more ad3 (2)“My experience as a member of Mothers & More has been extremely fulfilling,” says Colleen Braun, a two-year member of the group and mom of two. “It is my outlet for peace after a chaotic day, a source for some wonderful friendships, and a forum to learn new skills.”

Mothers & More is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers through support, education, and advocacy.

The organization began in 1987 and now has over 100 chapters nationwide. Membership includes women of all ages, with children of all ages. It includes those who have left the paid workplace and those who are working for pay part-time, full-time, and everything in between.

Mothers & More has an active chapter in Champaign County that offers numerous opportunities for women to connect with other mothers and to re-connect with themselves. Educational monthly chapter meetings, fun moms-only social events, an informative listserv, field trips and playgroups, and family events are some of the ways the chapter comes together.

“I joined Mothers & More when I first moved to the area and didn’t know anyone. Because of this group, I have found some great women to talk to, my son has made some friends, and I’ve learned a lot about what the community offers,” says Maria Bailey, mother of  two and a three-year member of Mothers & More.

Activities are organized by members of the group who volunteer their time. Leadership or committee roles provide great opportunities for personal growth as well as professional development.

The national organization offers additional benefits, including online news articles and conversation loops as well as further professional development opportunities.

The Champaign County chapter of Mothers & More meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Atlanta Bread Company in Champaign from 7 to 9 p.m.

Recent meeting topics have included: Preparing a Will, On-line Scrapbooking, Creating Balance in Your Life, Family Nutrition, and How to ‘Go Green’ in the Home.

The chapter is always welcoming new members to the group. Moms are invited to attend two events prior to becoming a dues-paying member (annual memberships can be purchased starting at $45; gift memberships can also be purchased for a special mother in your life).

In honor of Mothers & More’s partnership with, mention this article and receive $5 off your annual membership if you join by Feb. 15.

  1. I am one of the co-leaders of the Champaign County chapter and I also wanted to add that Mothers and More just started a 2 for $60.00 incentive program that goes through March 31st. For those who would be new members to the group they can join together with a friend and save on their annual dues.

Check out the website for contact information.

  2. I would have to agree! I’ve been a member of MAM for almost 4 years now and it’s been a great outlet for me. I joined because we had recently moved to Champaign, and I was longing to meet other moms who knew the ins and outs of Champaign/Urbana. I have learned a great deal about Champaign through this group, and have gotten to know a bunch of great moms along the way.
