If weekends could do steroids, I would definitely be suspect of this one. Because, it is HUGE. So many fun things, so little time! Of course, the headliner is the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival. Come to downtown Urbana for corn, stay for the fun … it might be our imagination, but it seems like there is more family-friendly fun in the schedule this year. On Friday evening, there is a Touch a Truck event (complete with a Toyota Prius) and the Scovill Mobile Zoo will be present. On Saturday, there is a music stage geared toward families that will include performances by the local high school marching bands among others; starts at noon and goes through the early evening. Here’s a complete Sweetcorn Festival schedule.

Here’s what else is on our radar this weekend:
Festivals: The Sweetcorn Festival isn’t the only game in town this weekend. Head out to Mahomet for the Sangamon River Festival, Friday through Sunday. There will be carnival rides (wristbands available Friday and Saturday for unlimited rides); a parade at 10 a.m. Saturday; and lots of free music. Over in Danville, there’s the Illinois Renaissance Festival, featuring performers presenting swordfights, jousting, bellydancing, combat demonstrations, comedy troupes, music and more.
Up in the Air: Check out the large radio-controlled aircraft during the Champaign County Radio Control Club Big Bird Fly-In, both Saturday and Sunday. Free admission and parking; food will be available on site. Or go see some full-size planes and other vehicles at the Coles County Airport Authority Air Show at the Coles County Airport; also free admission.
Football: Illinois high school football kicks off the season Friday night; head out and root root root for the home team (Urbana, Centennial, Mahomet-Seymour, Unity and St. Thomas More to name a few are all at home). And don’t forget the Illini football Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday morning, from 11:30 to 1:15 at Memorial Stadium.
Special Sales: Many of you know by now about the One Week Boutique baby and kids consignment sale, which continues through this weekend. But you may not know that Krannert Center for the Performing Arts raided its own closets to conduct its biennial costume and props sale, from 9 to noon at Saturday; bag sale starts at 1 p.m.
