“If you’re not dancing with everything you’ve got, then you leave me no choice, I’ve got to put you in time out to rock.” – The Not-Its!
The kiddie mosh pit started the moment I stuck The Not-Its! second album, Time Out to Rock, into the computer — and it was clear that this wasn’t your typical kiddie fare. Most people equate kid’s music with soft, acoustic guitar riffs — and there’s nothing soft or acoustic about The Not-Its! This is completely amped up, plugged in, new-fashioned kiddie rock straight from Seattle.
And true confessions: I can’t say I wasn’t head bopping when Green Light Go came on. That track is the equivalent of an audio version of the game Red Light Green Light — and is a great thing to put on at home when the kids need to burn off some energy. Time Out to Rock, the title track, will also have them in dance party mode.

The Not-Its!
One of the main attractions of this album is the juxtaposition of kids themes with the electric guitar and jamming drums. I also appreciate the talents of Sarah Shannon, the dreamy lead vocalist who is a great example for my wannabe rocker girls (I love how on the Not-Its! website fans can sing karaoke to their songs). Her voice entices the kids to stop bouncing for a moment and listen to the embedded messages of empowerment, self-confidence, and that it’s cool to be smart.
Time Out to Rock is a perfect back-to-school album. The first song is all about welcoming the new kid to class. Other songs talk about how to deal with bullies, what to do when accidents happen, and the joys of friendship. It is probably most appropriate for kids ages 3 to 8, although my little one certainly enjoys it.

My oldest, who is almost five, rocks out to just about anything but he lives anything he thinks is rock music–Signing Time CDs, the car radio when it’s not set to NPR, the Dinosaur Train theme song…
I just tweeter the contest @kmdougan. My son would love some new tunes!
My kids and I like Justin Roberts and Renee and Jeremy. Lately, my oldest likes Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger.
My 6 year old daughter loves Taylor Swift and Colbie Caillat, and my son loves anything that rocks! He just had his 4th birthday and had a guitar on his cake and asked for a drum set. He loves Jack Black’s School of Rock soundtrack, Shrek’s soundtrack, and also loves to dance to stuff on 96.1. My kids also both love the Laurie Berkner Band, so I’m sure they would love this!
I tweeted!
@haleys_scents

Our son rocks out to any rock music, although I’ve recently introduced him to Michel Camilo
Follow-up: in the interest of fairness, disregard my entry, since my wife entered earlier today
My daughter (21 months) has been grooving to anything by Joe Scruggs and Classical music on 90.9. We’d enjoy hearing some new tunes!
My daughter (nearly 2) is currently into the classic kids’ songs like “The Wheels on the Bus,” “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It ..” Basically, I have to spend my whole time singing in the car, with her directing me which songs to sing. Hee. Hee.
I put this into random.org … and Tara was the winner! Thanks everyone for entering. Sorry it took me so long to pick a winner!
