The summer months mean that having fun isn’t limited to the weekend. There’s something fun happening practically every day of the week.
We’ve got a few tips on what to do and where to go during the week of August 11-17. Of course, we’ll still bring you our full Weekend Planner on Friday morning. All events are free admission unless noted.
Wednesday, August 11
Don’t miss: Beat the heat at the FREE ice cream social at Common Ground Food Co-op in Urbana. Get a free scoop of local ice cream made from hormone- and antibiotic-free milk from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, August 12
Don’t miss: The sunset paddle at Homer Lake; get in a canoe and see what happens after dark. Minimum age to participate is 8 years old; an adult must accompany children under 18. $8 per person, or $4 if you bring your own canoe. Space is limited and registration is required.

Friday, August 13
Don’t miss: Enjoy the rhythms of Africa as the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International headlines the second Outside at the Research Park concert of the summer. The opening act starts at 6:15 p.m; OBDBI starts at 7:30 p.m. Food available for sale, or bring your own picnic. Free.
Saturday, August 14
Don’t miss: Some wonderful small town festivals – pick between the Sadorus First Settlers Celebration, Drummer Creek Dog Days (Gibson City) and the St. Joseph Community Festival.
Sunday, August 15
Don’t miss: Yet another Touch-a-Truck event — this time at the Savoy Recreation Center from noon to 3 p.m. Free!
Monday, August 16
Don’t miss: A special four-day Rookie Cooks program kicks off Monday from 2 to 4 p.m at the Champaign Public Library’s Douglass Branch. Kids will learn about cooking measurement devices, preparing a snack from a recipe, and enjoying the final tasty result. Heads up parents: registration is required for all four days.
Tuesday, August 17
Don’t miss: Head to Camp Rantoul to get up close and personal with the Illinois football team as they practice at 3:30 p.m.
