Seven Events in Seven Days: A Guide to the Week Ahead

The summer months mean that having fun isn’t limited to the weekend. There’s something fun happening practically every day of the week.

We’ve got a few tips on what to do and where to go during the week of July 21-27. Of course, we’ll still bring you our full Weekend Planner on Friday morning. All events are free admission unless noted.

Wednesday, July 21

Don’t miss: There’s rain in the forecast, so that’s all the more reason to head to the Rantoul Library at 2 p.m. for a free showing of the movie Flipper, a sweet flick about a boy (played by a young Elijah Wood) and a dolphin.

Thursday, July 22

Don’t miss: We love outdoor summer music. Come out at 7 p.m. for a “Twilight Concert” on the UI Quadrangle, a tradition that goes back 100 years and a special element of the Illinois Band Program. The summer band’s repertoire includes standard works for band, entertaining contemporary works, and popular selections from a wide array of musical styles. Free! (if rain, concert will be held in Harding Band Building)

Friday, July 23

Don’t miss: We’ve been waiting for this event all summer: it’s the Furry Friends Overnight at the Urbana Free Library. Tuck in your stuffed animals for a slumber party at the library from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Your stuffed animals will enjoy an overnight, and you can join them for a pancake breakfast the next morning at 9 a.m. Free for children of all ages; no registration required.

Saturday, July 24

Don’t miss: Did you know Lowe’s has free workshops twice a month for kids? This month’s project is a making a UFO. For school-aged kids; register on the Lowe’s website.

Sunday, July 25

Don’t miss: What’s there to do on a hot and steamy Sunday morning with the kids, if you’re not in church? Not much. Head over to Sesame Workshop: Summer Beach Party at the Beverly Theater (see our review). Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children.

Monday, July 26

Don’t miss: It’s Pre-School Day in Kiddie Land at the Champaign County Fair from 10 a.m. to noon. Tickets will be available to pre-school children only, tickets are limited to five (5) tickets per child. Additional tickets may be purchased for $.50 each.

Tuesday, July 27

Don’t miss: If it’s Tuesday, it must be u-pick time. Head over to Prairie Fruits Farm for organic blackberries and peaches (hours on Tuesdays: 5 to 8 p.m.) and the recently opened Curtis Orchard for apples.
