The summer months mean that having fun isn’t limited to the weekend. There’s something fun happening practically every day of the week.
We’ve got a few tips on what to do and where to go during the week of July 14-20. Of course, we’ll still bring you our full Weekend Planner on Friday morning. All events are free admission unless noted.
Wednesday, July 14
Don’t miss: It’s a Wet and Wacky Wednesday at the Savoy Recreation Center. Put the kids in their suits and let them get wet and wacky with the Rec Center’s slip and slide, kiddie pools, and sprinkler. For children ages 1-6 years with a caregiver; $3 for Savoy residents, $4 for non-residents (per child).
Thursday, July 15
Don’t miss: Your gradeschooler can celebrate or be introduced to the Franny K. Stein books — a series about a little girl whose goal in life is to be a mad scientist — at the Champaign Public Library at 2 p.m. Can’t get there? It must be the official Franny K. Stein week in C-U — there’s another event celebrating Franny at the Urbana Free Library on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Friday, July 16
Don’t miss: The free outdoor concerts at the University of Illinois Research Park are back! The festivities open up about 5:30 p.m., and the opening act takes the stage about 6:15; the headliner, Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas, will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Food will be for sale, or bring your own picnic. Your kids will be movin’ and groovin’.

Don’t miss: Is your family excited about the new Ramona and Beezus movie coming out next week? (The moms might be more excited than the kids. I know I grew up with these books!) Then head over to Borders in Champaign at 2 p.m. for a free celebration complete with games, activities, and giveaways (while supplies last).
Sunday, July 18
Don’t miss: If you missed the free outdoor concert on Friday night? Can’t get enough of free live music outdoors? Then head over to Hessel Park at 6:30 p.m. for an exciting night of swing music, sponsored by the Champaign Park District.
Monday, July 19
Don’t miss: Is your kid a gamer? Bring her or him over to the Champaign Public Library’s video game event for school-age kids. Come play a variety of games, from racing and wrestling to Guitar Hero and American Idol Karaoke at the Douglass Branch, from 3 to 4 p.m.
Tuesday, July 20
Don’t miss: It’s opening day at the Farmer City Dewitt County Fair. The events start at 1 p.m. with harness racing and more; admission fee unknown.
