Shop Local: Last-Minute Father’s Day Gift Ideas

So the big day is coming up this Sunday, and you’ve been procrastinating. What do you buy the favorite dad in your life? Be it your dad, your husband, your son, your uncle, or your grandpa, we’ve got a few ideas for some last-minute purchases that dad will love.

We asked some local merchants to give us their top picks for Father’s Day gifts. The only restriction: we asked that the items be under $50. Here’s some of our favorites (hint hint):
coffee

For the dad who loves coffee: It’s hard to resist the taste of Intelligentsia Coffee beans (did you know Intelligentsia Coffee was founded in Chicago? You can even tour their roasting facility on the West side), especially when used with a special coffee press. You can buy these items at Art Mart (located in Lincoln Square, Urbana), where they also carry plenty of cookbooks and specialty food items for the foodie dad. Coffee, $18; Press, $34.95

lehigh_valley_chain-fullFor the “vintage” dad: These are made by a Champaign native. He carefully chooses old, rare and used transportation tokens from years gone by such as vintage Chicago Transit tokens and bus tokens from Colorado and makes them into necklaces. $19 – $29. Buy one at B. Lime, 12 E. Washington SJune 2010 042t., downtown Champaign.

For the fashionista dad: OK, so most dads aren’t fashionistas, but they are particular about they wear (at least mine is). If your favorite dad is a little on the preppy side, try these shoes from Sperry. They retail for $55 at Bella Mia, 1422 S. Neil St., Champaign, but this week mention chambanamoms.com and get a 30 percent discount. OK, where’s the nearest lake?Compression Dry Sack

For the outdoorsy dad: Does your favorite dad like to hike, bike, fish, canoe or camp? Then this is a must-have accessory that will help keep his essentials dry (such as a sleeping bag for overnight trips, or other important items on day trips). This light, compact Sea to Summit eVent® Compression Dry Sack ($36.95, Size Large) is just what he needs, according to the friendly folks at Champaign Surplus (303 S. Neil St., Champaign).

LSU023-cFor the diehard Illini dad: Is your favorite dad toting his laptop from here to there and everywhere? Now he can do so — and show off his Illini pride. Pick up this $25 laptop sleeve from Gameday Spirit in Campustown (519 E. Green St., Champaign).
