Weekend Planner: Taste of Champaign-Urbana Edition

In case you’ve been living under the proverbial rock, you probably know that this weekend is the Taste of Champaign-Urbana. This three-day festival features food, free music and entertainment, and family-friendly fun. We’ll give you a few tips about Taste, but that’s not all there is to do in and around Champaign-Urbana this weekend. If you’re in the mood for something different, there’s something for everyone. In this edition: Toy Story 3 Movie Release Party; Urbana Pops at the Movies; Strawberry Jam; Old Glory Days in Bement.

What: Taste of Champaign-Urbana
When: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Where: West Side Park, Champaign
How much: Free music and entertainment; tickets on sale for food and inflatables
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Do you have a teen? One of the new features at Taste this year is the Teen Area on State Street, complete with a climbing wall, mini golf and a car simulator (all ticketed). What: Toy Story 3 Movie Release Party
When: Saturday, June 12, 11 a.m.
Where: Borders, 802 West Town Center Boulevard, Champaign
How much: Free
Appropriate for: 4 to 9
Why you should go: The movie doesn’t open until June 18 (and at least oneĀ  Chambana mom can’t wait), but Borders is having this party in anticipation of the big day. Celebrate with stories, games, giveaways and more.

What: Urbana Pops at the Movies Concert
When: Saturday, June 12, noon
Where: Lincoln Square, Urbana
How much: Free
Appropriate for: All Ages
Why you should go: Continuing our movie theme, this show would be a great introduction to classical music for kids and teens alike. The concert will feature tunes from Back to the Future, Batman, Harry Potter, and more.

What: Strawberry Jam
When: Saturday, June 12, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Meadowbrook Park, Urbana
How much: Free
Appropriate for: All Ages
Why you should go: Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and some chairs and settle in for an afternoon of family fun. This annual favorite event features free ice cream, strawberries, music and hayrack rides around picturesque Meadowbrook Park. Live Bluegrass music seals the deal.

What: Bement Old Glory Days
When: Saturday, June 12, all day
Where: Bement, IL
How much: Free (food, games may have charges)
Appropriate for: All Ages
Why you should go: There’s another Taste going on this weekend – the Taste of Bement at Old Glory Days in Piatt County. Also food, inflatables, and more.
