Urbana and Champaign parents are on edge because of issues regarding their children’s education. And many parents are going online to gather together in protest; to seek information; or simply to see that they aren’t in this struggle by themselves.
Districts around the area and the state have felt the ripple effects of the economic crisis and the state’s budget meltdown. Painful program and staff cuts have become a fact of life.
But in Urbana and Champaign, there are unique issues.
In Champaign, there is the seemingly never-ending controversy of the Controlled Choice kindergarten selection process at Unit 4. One local site, A citizen’s blog about Champaign Unit 4, posted over the weekend about the results of this year’s lottery. According to the numbers he received from Unit 4, 55 children — or 8 percent of the total registered — did not get their first, second or third choice.
Over in Urbana, District 116 is considering shuddering one of its six elementary schools. Some concerned parents and citizens are fighting to preserve all of its elementary schools against possible closure. They have formed a Facebook group to organize those who are opposed “to the closure of any of our Urbana neighborhood schools.”
We want to hear from parents who are concerned about their children’s future education.
Unit 4 parents: are you satisified with the school where your kindergartner is going to school next year? Unit 116 parents: are you fearful about losing a neighborhood school in Urbana?

I know one of those 55 children in Unit 4 who didn’t get into ANY of their school choices. The really frustrating thing about it is that they live HALF A BLOCK away from one school, five blocks from another, and less than a mile from yet another. Ridiculous!!!!
My family lives in Urbana, just three blocks away from our neighborhood school (Wiley), and I have always been grateful that we don’t have to deal with the Unit 4 craziness. But now I have to worry about Urbana closing our neighborhood school!
lmao cool story bro.
