One of the quilts -- this one made by Jacqueline Hannah, Mike Hannah, and Suzanne Linder -- that will be raffled off this Friday to benefit Doctors without Borders relief efforts in Haiti.
It has been three months since an earthquake devastated the island nation of Haiti, but the plight of earthquake survivors who have been left hungry and homeless has not been forgotten here in Champaign-Urbana.
Quilts made by a group of local quilters are being raffled off this week, with all the proceeds benefiting the relief efforts of Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. With the help of donations from all over the community, they created eight quilts that are now on display at Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana. Raffle tickets for the quilts are available for $5 at Art Mart, Common Ground Food Co-op, Sew Sassy, and Wind Water and Light from now until Thursday.
“As a mother, when I saw the pictures of the children who were suffering, who had lost their parents, and who were injured in Haiti I knew I had to do something,” said Hannah, an Urbana mom who founded U-C Quilts for Haiti with several friends two months ago. “My husband, Mike, and I were inspired to not just grieve for them, but to do something (we are a quilting team).”
The organizers hope to raise $3,000, and had sold tickets equaling almost half of their goal just three days into raffle sales. The drawing for all seven quilts will be held at the U-C Quilts for Haiti reception at Wind, Water, and Light on Friday, April 16 from 5:30 to 7:00pm with finger foods provided by Common Ground Food Co-op.
If you’d like to donate your time for Haiti, the Champaign Salvation Army is seeking thousands of local volunteers to help package foods on April 24-25 at the former Hobby Lobby building (next to County Market) in west Champaign. Volunteer for the “Million Meals for Haiti” event at the Salvation Army’s Web site, or call (217) 398-0428.
Know of any other ways locals are helping Haiti? We’d like to know!
