Crafts for the Anti-Crafter: Homemade Play Dough

You know what I hate?

The smell of play dough, that’s what. I also hate how it dries out in those little plastic cartons. Then when the kids want to play with it, I have to open a gazillon little cans just to get three tablespoons worth of clay.

When my daughter started preschool her teacher asked for volunteers to make play dough for the classroom once a week. Being the crafting Philistine that I am, I had no idea you could make your own play dough, but it seemed like a good idea.

And it totally is.

Homemade play dough is more pliable than the commercial stuff, you can make any colors you want, it stores beautifully in the fridge for months at a time, and it also smells delicious because the recipe I use calls for Kool Aid.

I know! Kool Aid!

It’s also a two-fer: You get to do a craft with your kid, and the result is a craft your kid can do by themselves. A parenting rarity — the win-win!

Homemade Kool Aid Play Dough

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 c. Flour
  • 1/2 c. Salt
  • 4 packs of unsweetened Kool Aid, any flavor
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 3 tbs. veggie oil

Directions:
Mix flour, salt, Kool Aid and oil until blended. Add boiling water. Mix with a spoon until cool enough to knead with your hands. Knead until color is blended. Store in air-tight bag or container in the fridge.

I use jello instead, it helps keep it pliable and smells great!

  2. Sarah says:

Will the kool-aid or jello stain the surface the kiddos are working on? (just want to take precautions incase) Awesome idea and can be made with what I have in the house!

It won’t stain any surfaces, but it may color your hands while you are kneading it. Happy crafting!
