The curtains will open on Tom Thumb Theater's production of The Frog Prince on March 5-7.

by Laura Weisskopf Bleill

Last March, I took my daughter to her first-ever live musical theater production. She was so proud to be going with her mommy and her grandmother to a show, and dressed to fit the part. Often times, theater for children in this community is aimed at older age groups, or it performed at times that aren’t convenient for our family. But the Champaign Urbana Junior Woman’s Club Tom Thumb Theater production of “The Little Mermaid” was the perfect option for her first show.

The CUJWC is back this weekend with its 56th annual play, The Frog Prince. Based upon a tale by The Brothers Grim, this production of The Frog Prince tells the tale of a young prince who has been turned into a frog by an evil witch.  After meeting several other frogs, a mediocre king, a court jester that can’t sing, and a young princess, who is also under a witch’s spell, Eric finds himself in more trouble cast upon him by the witch.

Champaign Urbana Junior Woman’s Club is a not-for-profit organization.  Proceeds from this event will support various community agencies and projects in Champaign County.

Showtimes are March 5 at 7:00 p.m.; March 6 at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m.; or March 7 at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The show will be performed at the Urbana High School Auditorium, 1002 S. Race St. Tickets are $6 at the door or $5 presale. Tickets are on sale through March 3 at all Schnuck’s locations.

CUJWC has given chambanamoms.com a pack of FOUR tickets for The Frog Prince to give away to one lucky reader! To enter, you must leave a comment and tell us  your favorite musical theater production. My all time favorite musical is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. I was so excited when the new one with Johnny Depp came out! Of course the original was what I grew up with, so it ranks higher!

I have just introduced musicals to my 5 year-old daughter, and she is loving CATS!

  2. Veronica Pomata says:

Since if we win this, my toddler will be the one who will enjoy it the most, I’ll mention his favorite musical: Mary Poppins! (I must confess, though, that all of us enjoy it quite a bit!)

  3. Cheri says:

I don’t have a favorite, but some memorable ones include Cabaret, because i saw it on Broadway, and Sunday in the Park with George, the PBS Great Performances version with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. My daughter loves Phantom of the Opera.

  4. Lisa Sprinkle says:

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday today, I will say Seussical the Musical

  5. Jessica K. says:

My all-time fave is “Phantom of the Opera”–it was the first cd I ever bought. The Who’s “Tommy” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” are right up there on the list, too. If I were to ask my daughter what her favorite is, I’m sure she would say “The Aristocats”–she loved the Champaign Park District Youth Theater production a couple weeks ago at Class Act.

  6. Vickie says:

    Sound of Music. Hands down.

  7. Les Mis and Jesus Christ Superstar are hits in our house.

  8. Kristi Seidenfaden says:

Everyone I see becomes my favorite but a few that stand out are Les Mis and Mamma Mia. I love any and all musicals and I am hoping to pass on that love to my children.

  9. Nicole Dickerson says:

Gotta say Phantom of the Opera! Saw it is Toronto at The Pantages Theatre and have been hooked ever since! :-)

  10. Angie Kerr says:

AHHH that is a tough one! Growing up it was West Side Story hands down….now it is a tie with Wicked!! Both are sooo good!

    The Producers. Hilarious.

  13. Kristi Lietz says:

My favorite was Wizard of Oz. My mom used to take me to the Junior’s production when I was little and you could get their autographs. I thought it was the most exciting thing to meet a real star!!

  14. Jen R. says:

I can’t pick just one. Les Miz, Sound of Music, Westside Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Godspell. I don’t know if TV shows count – but I also love Glee!

  15. Mindy H says:

I’d have to say it’s a tie between Les Miz, Wicked, and Hairspray.

    tweeted! @mindylh13

  17. Keri says:

I love going to the Little Theater in Sullivan for both their adult and children’s productions. My all time favorite is West Side Story.

  18. Rebecca says:

My favorite musical is The Sound of Music. We watched it every year. Different songs bring back different memories of my childhood.

I am thinking about taking my 3 year old boy to this on Sunday. Can anyone say how long it is?
