Dear Katherine,

I should be asleep right now, but your performance in the women’s 1,000 meter short track speed skating has me still in awe.

First, congratulations on your silver medal performance.
We are so happy for you and your family, who supported you every inch of your incredible journey — from the Learn to Skate program at the University of Illinois Ice Area to the medal stand at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

Second, Thank you.

Thank you for showing a new generation of Champaign-Urbana boys and girls that their dreams can come true. Just as Bonnie Blair did for you, there were will be many children in our area who see you as a source of inspiration – as proof that someone from their hometown can shine on the world’s greatest stage. Your confidence, your patriotism, your work ethic will be contagious.

As a mom of daughters, I can’t thank you enough for showing my little girls that women athletes deserve to command the spotlight. That someone like them can parade our flag in a victory lap. That someone like them is fast, fearless and dedicated.

Thank you for your exuberant celebration. I only wish NBC had shown more of it.

Enjoy this fantastic moment, and please know you have made everyone back here in Champaign-Urbana incredibly proud.

Fondly,

Laura

I share your sentiments Laura–and extend them to Jonathan Kuck as well. You are both great role models and have been able to come home with medals that recognize your hard work and dedication.
