The best thing about this weekend just might be that after it’s over, the calendar will turn to March. But in the meantime, we’ll gear up for the green of spring with some “green” activities this weekend. In this edition of Weekend Planner: Annual Insect Fear Film Festival; Electronics Recycling; and Build A Backyard Bird Sanctuary.
What: Countywide Residential Electronics Collection
When: Saturday, February 27, 8 am -1 pm
Where: 3202 Apollo Drive, Champaign; located in the Apollo Industrial Park off N. Market St.
How much: Free
Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: Because it’s difficult to get rid of old TVs, cell phones, printers, etc. that are clogging up your closets. Here’s a way to show your kids the importance of recycling while also doing some spring cleaning. Ten item limit; click here for more information and the full list of items accepted.
What: The 27th Annual Insect Fear Film Festival
When: Saturday, Feb. 27; doors open at 6 p.m., films start at 7:15
Where: Foellinger Auditorium (University of Illinois campus)
How Much: Free
Appropriate for: Pre-film activities appropriate for all ages
Why You Should Go: The movies might not be appropriate for younger kids, but the activities before the films begin promise to be educational and fun. The event will feature face painting, locally-made insect-related artwork, exotic insect displays from around the world, an insect petting zoo, featuring popular ‘pets’ like cockroaches, moths and grasshoppers! A new feature will be live horseshoe crabs and a display of insect fossils.
What: Build A Backyard Bird Sanctuary
When: Saturday, February 27, 9 to 10 a.m.
Where: Illini FS Farmtown, 1509 E. University Ave.
How much: $5 for supplies
Appropriate for: 3 and up
Why you should go: Billed as a hands on experience geared towards kids – learn about the food, shelter and nesting needs of local birds while creating their own backyard birdfeeding sanctuary. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration requested.
