Go Down The Rabbit Hole With Opheum Children’s Science Museum

The Orpheum Children’s Science Museum in downtown Champaign will bring one of the best-loved children’s books of all time to life next weekend when they host “Alice (and me) in Wonderland,” a three-day interactive adventure.

The event, scheduled for March 5-7, will offer a huge variety of “Alice”-themed adventures, says Deborah Israel, the museum’s director of operations. “What people can expect is a kind of haunted-house atmosphere, except that it is all about ‘Alice in Wonderland.’”

The museum’s mezzanine will be transformed into Alice’s garden, the Mad Hatter will be available for tea and there will be, of course, croquet — featuring flamingo mallets — with the Queen of Hearts, among many other activities.

The museum will be transformed after closing on Friday, and will re-open just an hour later in full fantasy mode. The event will raise money to continue restoring the Orpheum’s auditorium, Israel says, so that it can be used to host community event and possibly even theater productions.

“We really want to make that space a viable community center,” she says.

Israel adds that the community has come together to help the Orpheum create this ambitious event, and the list of contributors — which includes chambanamoms.com faves Class Act Interactive and Bella Bambini – is long and impressive. Chambanamoms.com is also proud to be a sponsor.

So hurry! Don’t wait until the last minute. Tickets are available online for $10. And don’t forget about the Mad Tea Party at Jim Gould’s tomorrow, Feb. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.: Come for high tea with your favorite “Alice in Wonderland” characters,  photo ops and a children’s fashion show sponsored by Bella Bambini. Call 531-1177 for tickets.
