I spy….singing along loudly to kid and adult cds and letting my son bring his guitar along so he can pretend to sing along. Lots and lots of books and a couple new movies if it is a long trip. Breaking it up (leaving really early in the a.m. or driving for a while after bedtime) so they can sleep part of the time always works great too, no matter how old they are

We just got a DVD player, but whenever possible, we fly. Southwest is cheap enough for us to make it back to Cleveland to see family regularly.

We have magnadoodles that never leave the car- these are great. Also all the familiar car games- “My grandmother went to Europe…” and guessing how many miles to the next scenic something or other(rest area, McDonald’s, lake, etc) and I Spy and math problems and counting cows…. Oh- and Dramamine to combat the ills that often come with too much attention to the magnadoodles….

Snacks. And yoga clothes for mom so I can climb to the back of the mini-van to break up fighting, retrieve snacks off of floor to reclycle when we run out of snack, and when I try to convince the baby that mommy is really holding him and he is not strapped into his car-seat not being held by mommy. Oh, and the car-top carrier, where we put all our stuff. And the bike rack, and the huge stroller, and the baby gear…

We do lots of books on tape in the van. They can color or draw while it is playing in the background. Also when we are going on a long trip I get little goodies for them and wrap them up. Then I give them a new “present” every hour or so. They think it is much more fun because it is wrapped!
