Yes, that's a pothos and I have one of even hoarier vintage than yours, Amy: it was given to me by a girlfriend as a housewarming gift when we moved into our house 18 years ago. It's been repotted only once and currently lives in a bowl I unceremoniously dumped its rootball in when our smallest dog inadvertantly sent it and its now destroyed clay pot home crashing to the tile floor in our kitchen. The bowl was just an emergency "make do" until I could get another suitably sized clay pot--that was months ago and the thing is thriving like crazy--IN A METAL BOWL. Yep. These babies cannot be killed.

By the way, the plant is a pothos. I'm pretty sure they will be the only surviving houseplant in a post-apocalyptic world... Thanks for the essay.

I came to C-U in 1968 to attend the Big U. I am from NYC area [Manhattan till I was 11--then to Jersey]. To this day, I feel a deep affinity for the east coast and identify myself as an easterner. As soon as I can "smell" that east coast essence I often say outloud to the family [usually in the car] "Oh I'm home."

On one trip several years ago when my kids were pre-teen/teen age and on our way to a family gathering at the Long Island beaches, I made that same comment. My son responded "That's how I feel as we approach Urbana". It made me pause, because by that time, I'd lived here FAR longer than I had ever lived anywhere else out east. But I'm still an east coast girl at heart...even though I have VERY deep roots here now. BTW, my husband was born in Rochester--his parents were at Eastman until his dad got a job at the UofI School of Music in the late 50's.

Ahhhh... youth is so wasted on the young. Isn't it great to be into your '30s and at the stage where you can stop angsting and just be? That's my take on your beautiful post.

Beautiful post, as usual...If you ever want to kill that plant, send it to my house. Green, leafy things don't stand a chance under my care.
