Will you be spending the holiday break in C-U? Looking for things to do with the kids home from school, or the daycare is closed? All your playdate friends out of town? Here’s our list of suggestions to keep the kids occupied:

Take them to a special event:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 22: The Amazing Acro-Cats and Rock-Cats disprove the notion that “cats can’t be trained” as they perform a variety of Christmas themed tricks. appeals to cat lovers of all ages. At the Urbana Civic Center, 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available online ($10).
  • Monday, Dec. 28 is Take a Kid to the Game night at the Assembly Hall. Kids get in to the Illini women’s basketball game against Top 25 power Ohio State (7 p.m.) for free with the purchase of an adult ticket. One free child’s ticket per adult ticket purchased; Additional kids tickets are $2 each.
  • On Tuesday, Dec. 29, head out to the free Indoor Carnival sponsored by the Champaign Park District at the Hays Recreation Center.  Children 5 to 11, with an adult, can enjoy bozo buckets, ring toss, face painting and more.
  • Thursday, Dec. 31 is New Year’s Eve day. We know of at least three area “Noon Year’s Eve” programs where children can celebrate a countdown to “midnight” — when they’re wide awake. The Urbana Free Library, the Savoy Rec Center, and the Champaign Park District all will host such events; see our event calendar for details. The Savoy and Champaign events do require registration (the CPD event’s is cancelled).

Sign them up for a class/camp:

  • During the week of New Year’s, The Little Gym in Savoy offers morning and afternoon “Wacky Winter” camp sessions for children ages 3-8 who are bathroom independent (once again, see our calendar).
  • The 22nd annual Junior Tennis Camp will once again be offered by the Champaign Park District on Dec. 26-30. For ages 6-18.

Get them moving:

  • With school not in session, the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center has extended hours, including open swim daily.
  • Take the kids ice skating at the UI Ice Arena. Public skates are scheduled daily with the exception of Dec. 24-25 and Jan. 1.
