For the second time in a week the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall of cribs, this time from the New Jersey-based manufacturer LaJobi Inc.

The models in question are “Molly” and “Betsy” and were sold between 2000 and 2001. About 400 cribs are part of the recall. Federal officials warn that many of them may be in second-hand stores by now, according to a story in USAToday. The cribs featureĀ  cut-outs in the end panels that can allow young children to get their heads entrapped, which can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers.

Katie Stafford, a managing partner of Babyland in Savoy, told chambanamoms.com that the store does not now and never has carried cribs made by LaJobi Inc., nor does it carry any Stork Craft drop-side cribs that were recently recalled over the safety concerns.

What’s so dangerous about a drop-side crib? Babies are getting stuck in them and suffocating, says Stafford.

“We do have some companies that we work with that are working on alternatives to the drop side,” Stafford told chambanamoms.com. “One company has a drop gate, which is a stationary side with moving parts.”

Parents find the drop-side cribs convenient as children get older and they have to lower the position of the mattress, Stafford says. She added that she expects new models of cribs to have stationary sides that bolt into various positions. That will allow parents to maneuver older kids in and out of their cribs — but safely.
