National Waffle Shortage Hits Chambana

Kellogg Co. announced this week that due to production issues at its Atlanta plant, Eggo-brand products are in short supply and will be until mid-2010.

According to reports on CNN and other major media outlets like National Public Radio and Yahoo!, the problem centers around two of the company’s bakeries. October floods forced the company to shut down an Atlanta bakery. A second facility in Tennessee, which is Kellogg’s largest waffle producer, is undergoing repairs.

A shopper at Meijer in Urbana noted that the supply of frozen waffles was, indeed, quite slender. Most of the Eggo products were gone from the freezer case, and just a few packs of Meijer-brand frozen waffles were available for purchase.

Doug Himelick is the store manager for Schnuck’s on North Vine Street in Urbana, and he told chambanamoms.com that his store is also experiencing problems with shipments from Kellogg Co. He added that the store received information about the waffle shortfall from its corporate headquarters.

“I printed out part of the information they sent and posted it [on the freezer case],” Himelick said.

According to news reports, Kellogg is “rationing” the remaining waffles; the popular breakfast item will be sent to stores across the country based on historical sales figures for those retail outlets. Other products affected include pancakes and syrup.

Our recommendation? Make your own and freeze them. Pop them in the toaster and  — viola! — your very own homemade waffles, and you control the ingredients. Try using whole wheat flour or adding some fruit puree.

Are frozen waffles a staple in your breakfast repertoire?

My husband is addicted to Eggo blueberry waffles and has been very upset with me that I haven’t bought him any at the grocery store recently. I can’t wait to send him this link. It ain’t my fault!!!!

  2. Kel says:

I bought a family size Eggo box at the Schnucks in Savoy last night. I should’ve bought two! They had a few styles. Christa-they did have several boxes of the blueberry ones!

This also works well with pancakes. Make sure to put wax or parchment paper between each and put in a freezer bag for homemade convenience. For pancakes, put them in the microwave for ~30 seconds per pancake.

  4. Kelly says:

Sam’s still had mega boxes of Eggos, but I think they were just plain. My husband and I actually joked about how the waffle shortage hadn’t hit Chambana yet, but apparently we were wrong!

I’m with you, Jason. I’ve been known to make an extra batch of homemade waffles on the weekend and freeze for later in the week. Can be “toasted” up in the toaster oven.

  6. The LeRoy IGA is fully stocked with Eggos if anyone wants to make the drive to get their fix. :)
